BROOKLYN—Move Forward Music unveiled its full lineup for the inaugural Sounds That Move festival Tuesday. The three-day event will transform Scott Avenue in Bushwick. Organizers promised a “decentralized” experience. This means attendees will be on their own. The festival aims for a raw, authentic vibe. It will feature artists like Hope Tala and Saba. The Sounds That Move festival is expected to draw thousands. Many are seeking a more organic music discovery journey. This is not your typical festival setup. It is more like an urban scavenger hunt. But with better music. And possibly tetanus.
Artistic Vision or Urban Blight?
Festival organizers described the Scott Avenue location as a blank canvas. “We wanted to capture the raw energy of Brooklyn,” said lead curator Bartholomew ‘Barty’ Crumple. He is the Director of Experiential Authenticity. “Where else can you hear cutting-edge music amidst active industrial zones? It’s a truly multi-sensory experience.” Crumple added that the lack of traditional festival infrastructure was intentional. “We don’t want to tell people where to go. We want them to discover their own path. Find their own stage. Find their own safety barriers.” More information can be found at Move Forward Music.
Attendee Preparedness
The Sounds That Move festival’s decentralized nature raised some questions. Local resident and self-proclaimed urban explorer, Brenda Knuckles, expressed mild concern. “I’m excited for the music,” Knuckles said. She is the President of the Bushwick Area Noise Appreciation Society. “But Scott Avenue isn’t exactly known for its amenities. Or its paved sidewalks. Or its lack of stray hypodermic needles.” She advised attendees to wear sturdy boots. “And maybe a helmet.” She also recommended packing a first-aid kit. The festival is scheduled for May 19-21. Many are hoping the sounds move them. Others just hope they move safely.
At press time, organizers announced a partnership with a local scrap metal dealer. They will be providing “artisanal seating” for VIP attendees.
