PHOENIX—Waymo’s skyrocketing ridership in one chart confirmed local panic yesterday. The autonomous ride-hailing service saw weekly paid trips increase tenfold in under two years. This surge has reportedly crippled the regional taxi industry. Drivers are now demanding answers. They fear for their livelihoods. The data was released by Waymo’s parent company, Alphabet. The Unmanned Uprising
Local taxi driver Barry Jenkins expressed grave concerns. “This is a disaster,” Jenkins stated. He is the President of the United Taxi Workers Union. “How are we supposed to compete? Waymo representatives dismissed the union’s fears. They cited a recent study. That study claimed robotaxis enhance city mobility. It also boosts local economies. “Waymo is committed to safe, reliable transportation for all,” said fictional Waymo spokesperson Brenda Gethers. She is Waymo’s Senior Director of Public Perception. “Our skyrocketing ridership in one chart reflects public trust. It shows the demand for innovative solutions.” Gethers did not comment on the union’s demands. She did, however, highlight Waymo’s expansion plans. New cities are reportedly being scouted. This includes cities with large taxi fleets. This seems like bad news for human drivers everywhere. The future is apparently electric. And it has no steering wheel.
