MIAMI—Latin pop icon Prince Royce launched a high-profile protest today following the complete Prince Royce protests bachata snub from the 2026 Latin Grammy nominations. The artist expressed outrage that the Best Merengue/Bachata Album category featured zero actual bachata artists. In response, Royce successfully replaced every physical trophy at the academy headquarters with a fresh, hollowed-out pineapple.
A Question of Representation
"It is about representation," Royce stated while wheeling a dolly of tropical fruit into the lobby. "If they cannot hear the signature guitar rolls of our genre, they do not deserve metal trophies. They get fruit instead. It decays at the same rate as their cultural credibility." The artist noted that the current nominees actually play synth-pop and polka. He believes the academy simply Googled "warm weather music" to populate the category.
The Latin Recording Academy defended its nomination process in a hasty press conference. Officials claimed they used a new artificial intelligence algorithm to sort the genres. However, industry insiders remain highly skeptical of the technology.
The Acoustic Verdict
"The algorithm likely flagged the word 'bachata' as a type of artisanal sourdough bread," said Rusty Calhoun, retired stadium acoustician and founder of Dads Against Bass. "My acoustic sensors show that the academy voters actually prefer silence. But they settle for whatever has the loudest cowbell. Prince Royce is entirely correct to deploy the pineapples."
At press time, academy executives were seen trying to polish the pineapples to prepare for the live telecast.
