LOS ANGELES—Indie rock icon Mac DeMarco surprised fans today as his Mac DeMarco streaming catalog expanded to include four formerly tour-only CDs. The surprise digital drop includes the acoustic project Dog On The Rock. However, listeners quickly noticed that disc three consists entirely of DeMarco doing his laundry. The 45-minute track features the artist sorting whites, measuring liquid detergent, and humming softly. Fans initially mistook the rhythmic thumping of a heavy-duty spin cycle for a new avant-garde percussion style.
The Sound of Clean Laundry
Industry experts rushed to analyze the sudden Mac DeMarco streaming event. The transition from physical CD-Rs to digital platforms marks a new era for the lo-fi pioneer. DeMarco apparently recorded the chores on a vintage Tascam four-track cassette recorder. "We did not intend to upload the washing machine audio," said Marcus Bellweather, Spotify's Senior VP of Playlist Emotional Intelligence. "But the algorithm already categorized it as 'Chill Lofi Beats to Fold Socks To' so we cannot legally take it down."
