MELBOURNE— Australian indie rocker Alex Lahey shocked fans today by releasing her new Alex Lahey Garage Sale EP, which consists entirely of physical lawn equipment and dusty boxes. Listeners who downloaded the digital bundle received audio files of rusted hedge clippers scraping against concrete. The release follows her acclaimed 2023 album The Answer Is Always Yes.
A Literal Clearance of the Vaults
Industry analysts expected a collection of unreleased B-sides from the Melbourne native. Instead, buyers received heavy cardboard boxes containing half-empty paint cans and mismatched coffee mugs. "We thought the title was a clever metaphor," said Gordon Flense, Deputy Undersecretary for Things That Were Fine Before. "It is not. I now own a broken weedwhacker that smells like old gasoline."
The Alex Lahey Garage Sale campaign aims to disrupt the traditional merchandise model by clearing out the singer's actual suburban storage unit. Fans can purchase different tiers of the EP on her official Bandcamp page. The deluxe edition includes a 1998 Honda Civic alternator with no guaranteed functionality.
No Refunds on Indie Rock
"Art is about letting go of clutter," said Agnes Periwinkle, Head of Audience Sedation at Live Nation. "Lahey is simply bypassing the middleman of goodwill donations to fund her next tour." Critics praise the bold move, noting that the physical weight of the Alex Lahey Garage Sale items makes them far more durable than vinyl.
At press time, Lahey was seen haggling with a fan over a chipped ceramic frog that supposedly contains the stem files to her biggest hit.
