LONDON—Singer-songwriter Laura Marling stunned fans today by releasing a full album of Raffi covers. “Laura Sings Raffi” features Marling’s interpretations of beloved children’s classics. The surprise drop arrived without prior announcement. Marling explained the project in a prepared statement. “Laura Sings Raffi marks a logical next step for me,” she wrote. She recently welcomed her second child.
A New Direction for Marling
The album includes renditions of “Down by the Bay.” It also features “Bananaphone.” Fans expressed surprise online. Many questioned the artistic choices. “I love Laura Marling,” said fan Beatrice Abernathy. Abernathy is the Official Unofficial President of the Laura Marling Fan Club. “But I did not expect this. It is very… Raffi.” The album was recorded quickly. Sources say it was completed in a single afternoon.
Artistic Intent
Marling cited her recent motherhood as inspiration. “The songs resonate differently now,” she stated. “I feel a deeper connection to the material.” She believes the album will appeal to both parents and children. “Laura Sings Raffi is for everyone,” Marling insisted. Critics are divided. Some praise her bold artistic statement. Others find the album baffling. Music journalist Rex Sterling IV called it “a brave, if bewildering, choice.” He noted the stark contrast to her previous work. Marling’s intricate guitar playing is present. It is now applied to simplified melodies. The project could redefine children’s music. Or it could be a brief detour. Only time will tell. Fans can stream “Laura Sings Raffi” on all major platforms. The album’s success is currently unknown. Marling has not announced tour dates. She plans to focus on family life. This includes further Raffi studies.
At press time, Raffi himself had reportedly requested a duet album.
