Microsoft announces an à la carte Xbox Game Pass tier that charges players $8 a month to sit on the main menu.

Xbox Game Pass - Xbox Game Pass Adds À La Carte Option To Pay For Just The Main Menu

REDMOND, WA—Tech giant Microsoft announced a massive overhaul to its subscription services Wednesday. The updated Xbox Game Pass will feature an à la carte model. This plan lets users pay solely for access to the console's main menu.

Customizable Misery

The new base tier costs $7.99 per month. Subscribers can navigate tile menus in crisp 4K resolution. They can also listen to relaxing background ambient music. However, selecting any actual video game immediately triggers a paywall.

"Gamers demanded more choice," said Marcus Vance, Senior Vice President of Micro-Tiers at Xbox. "Many players spend three hours scrolling through titles anyway. They end up playing nothing. We simply monetized that paralyzing indecision."

Subscribers can customize their experience with individual add-ons. System updates cost an extra $2 each. The ability to view your friends list requires a monthly $3 surcharge. Sending a party invite costs 50 cents per recipient.

The Future Of Subscriptions

Industry analysts praised the unbundled strategy as a bold leap forward. They noted that modern consumers prefer targeted digital fees over bundled value.

"It is pure genius," said Dr. Thaddeus Mbeki-Ransome, Chair of Applied Hype Studies at the Institute for Trending Phenomena. "You give the user the illusion of agency. In reality, you charge them five dollars to adjust their own screen brightness settings."

Microsoft confirmed additional à la carte add-ons are coming soon. Players can eventually pay $4.99 a month for the exclusive privilege of downloading game patches at full internet speed.

At press time, Xbox Game Pass introduced a $12 premium tier that allows users to turn off the console without unplugging it from the wall.
