FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SAN JOSE, CA—Federal authorities today clarified that an alleged Chinese agent arrested in California is actually just an unemployed local woman with an extreme passion for touring high-end open houses. The Federal Bureau of Investigation previously alleged that the suspect conducted hostile surveillance on foreign nationals. However, new evidence suggests she simply wanted to look at modern kitchen islands and walk-in closets.
The Espionage of Interior Design
"We deeply regret the misunderstanding regarding the alleged Chinese agent," said Arthur Pendelton, Deputy Director of Misguided Counterintelligence. "Our agents tracked her to seven different million-dollar mansions in one weekend. We thought she was mapping escape routes. It turns out she was just judging the crown molding. She also ate an entire platter of complimentary cheese cubes."
According to her defense attorney, the suspect spent three years masquerading as a high-net-worth buyer. She frequently asked realtors intense questions about property lines. Prosecutors originally interpreted these questions as tactical intelligence gathering. They now understand she was just wondering if she could fit a hot tub in the side yard.
A Statement From Corporate Leadership
"We are thrilled to clear up this minor miscommunication regarding our premier open-house enthusiast," said Agnes Periwinkle, Head of Audience Sedation at Live Nation, who somehow sponsored the press conference. "We support anyone who spends their weekends pretending to have a budget of six million dollars. This is the American dream in action. We stand by our right to eat free cookies in homes we cannot afford."
Investigators also addressed reports that the alleged Chinese agent took detailed photographs of security systems. Neighbors noted she only photographed the Nest thermostats. She reportedly told undercover agents that she found the digital interface "extremely sleek and modern."
