WASHINGTON—The Federal Reserve shocked global markets on Thursday. Policymakers voted to increase federal reserve rates by a historic 145 percentage points. This move brings the benchmark interest rate to an unprecedented 150 percent. Analysts expected a modest quarter-point increase to combat lingering inflation. Instead, central bankers opted for a catastrophic hike simply to feel a fleeting sense of excitement.
Chasing the High
The aggressive adjustment left Wall Street in immediate shambles. Major stock indices plummeted within seconds of the announcement. "We just needed to feel something real again," said Jerome Powell, Chairman of the Federal Reserve. Powell addressed reporters while spinning a roulette wheel at the press podium. "The quarter-point hikes felt like dripping lukewarm water on our wrists. We wanted to see what happens when you pull the emergency brake at eighty miles per hour. It was beautiful."
Economists scrambled to assess the damage to consumer credit. Mortgages and car loans instantly became impossible for anyone without a sovereign wealth fund. Yet, inside the Eccles Building, officials reportedly popped bottles of cheap sparkling wine. They blasted techno music to celebrate the new federal reserve rates.
A Cry for Help
Not everyone in the financial sector shared the excitement of the central bank. Many experts warned of a total collapse of the global banking system. Others suggested the board members are experiencing a profound collective mid-life crisis.
"This is a cry for help from a group of very bored technocrats," said Dr. Helene Vasquez-Thorne, Lead Researcher at the Center for Studies That Confirm What You Already Suspected. "When you spend forty years staring at spreadsheets, a normal life loses its flavor. They did not raise federal reserve rates to curb consumer spending. They did it to watch the red lines on the monitors go down really fast. It is basic human psychology."
At press time, Powell was seen staring out a window. He was muttering about whether a 400 percent rate hike next week would finally cure his numbness.
