LOS ANGELES—Metallica announced Tuesday they are preparing a fully loaded ‘ReLoad’ box set reissue for this summer. The deluxe edition of their seventh album will contain demos, live recordings, rough mixes, and concert films. This marks the band’s latest attempt to wring value from their back catalog. The original ‘ReLoad’ album, released in 1997, featured hits like “Fuel” and “The Memory Remains.” Critics at the time called the album “a confusing mess of half-baked ideas.”
More Riff, Less Load
The new box set promises an exhaustive look at the ‘ReLoad’ era. Fans can expect hundreds of previously unreleased tracks. “We really dug deep for this one,” said Lars Ulrich, drummer and keeper of the vault. “We found so many sounds and ideas. It’s like finding money in your old jeans, but the jeans are 25 years old and smell a bit funky.” The fully loaded box set is expected to be a significant financial boon for the band. It also serves as a reminder that the band has been around for a while. Ulrich stressed the importance of revisiting their past work. “It’s important to remember where we came from,” he added. “And to make sure no one forgets we released this album.”
A Generous Helping of ‘ReLoad’
The ‘ReLoad’ box set includes material from the album’s recording sessions. It also features a concert film from a 1997 show. The film captures the band in their prime. Or at least, their mid-90s prime. This latest reissue follows similar deluxe editions of ‘Kill ‘Em All,’ ‘Ride the Lightning,’ ‘Master of Puppets,’ and ‘…And Justice for All.’ “We have a lot of stuff,” explained Kirk Hammett, guitarist and collector of vintage wah pedals. “It’s good stuff. Some of it. You should buy it. Seriously.” The band is also rumored to be working on new material. That material may or may not appear on a future fully loaded box set. For now, fans can look forward to more ‘ReLoad.’ More ‘ReLoad’ is always coming.
At press time, Metallica announced that the ‘ReLoad’ box set would include a free digital download of their 1999 album ‘S&M’. This was to help fans decide which of the two albums they disliked more.
