MEXICO CITY—The highly anticipated Mike Patton Mondo Cane tour made its debut in Mexico last night with an unexpected local collaboration. Patton hired the esteemed Mariachi Gama 1000. However, instead of playing traditional string instruments, he ordered them to scream directly into the crowd. The performance baffled fans of his Italian pop cover project.
A Brand New Direction
Patton wanted a traditional flavor for the show. He insisted on adding authentic regional musicians. Yet, his avant-garde instincts quickly took over the rehearsals. "He took away my trumpet on day one," said Rodrigo Gama, lead horn player for the ensemble. "He told me my brass tone was too cheerful. He then handed me a megaphone and told me to imitate a dying lawnmower."
The Mike Patton Mondo Cane show usually features lush orchestral arrangements of 1960s pop classics. Last night, the band replaced those beautiful arrangements with feedback loops. Patton stood at the center of the stage. He conducted the mariachi musicians using complex hand signals that mostly meant "scream louder."
Audience Confusion
Industry experts watched the spectacle with mild concern. "We expected some crooning," said Marcus Bellweather, Senior VP of Playlist Emotional Intelligence at Spotify. "Instead, we got ninety minutes of a gentleman in a sequined mariachi suit making wet clicking sounds into a microphone. It does not fit our 'Chill Afternoon' playlist."
Local fans remained divided on the performance. Some praised the artistic courage of the Mike Patton Mondo Cane experience. Others simply wanted to hear the hit songs without the threat of hearing damage. Patton reportedly spent the final thirty minutes of the set throwing raw jalapeños at the soundboard.
At press time, Patton was seen backstage teaching a local youth choir how to hyperventilate in unison for the next tour stop.
