SEOUL— Following two years of military service, K-pop idol TAEYONG’s WYLD album has premiered to significant industry confusion. The NCT leader proclaimed his first studio album symbolic of newfound freedom. He claimed to simply “do what he wants” in its creation. Industry insiders confirmed this approach resulted in 12 tracks of unedited ambient noise.
A Radical New Sound
The album, titled ‘WYLD,’ reportedly features zero conventional instrumentation. Instead, listeners are treated to a 42-minute soundscape. It includes recordings of TAEYONG’s daily activities. Sources close to the production team described tracks like “Morning Commute (Footsteps and a Cough)” and “Laundry Day (Spin Cycle Mix).”
“His artistic evolution is truly courageous,” stated Dr. Elara Vance, chair of the Fictional Musicology Department at Seoul National University, adjusting her spectacles. “To strip away melody, harmony, and rhythm, that takes a certain… audacity. It’s certainly a statement about letting instinct lead, even if that instinct apparently leads to the sounds of a refrigerator humming.”
Embracing Pure Instinct
SM Entertainment, TAEYONG’s agency, released a statement praising his “unfiltered creative vision.” They confirmed the album’s minimalist approach was entirely TAEYONG’s decision. He allegedly rejected all pre-composed demos. He instead provided producers with a series of voice memos. These memos reportedly contained snippets of his internal monologue and various bodily functions. “He just played us the sound of his stomach rumbling and said, ‘This is track three,'” recalled a visibly shaken sound engineer, who requested anonymity due to contractual obligations with SM Entertainment.
The album’s title track, also named ‘WYLD,’ is an 8-minute recording. It captures what appears to be TAEYONG attempting to open a particularly stubborn jar of pickles. Critics have lauded its “authentic struggle” and “unflinching commitment to reality.” However, many fans expressed disappointment. They expected music rather than an audio diary of minor inconveniences.
At press time, TAEYONG announced a ‘WYLD’ world tour. It promises to feature him sitting silently on stage while a curated selection of his daily life sounds plays from an unseen speaker.
